Starting Fresh. The Story Behind Adam’s Acre Ltd

Adam’s Acre Ltd is a new gardening service in Codsall, South Staffordshire launched in September 2024 by founder Adam Elshaw. After more than twenty five years in teaching, Adam felt ready for a new direction. He wanted a role that kept him outdoors, working with people and making a clear difference in everyday life. Gardening felt like the right fit and the idea for Adam’s Acre grew from there.

Adam joined the Start Up South Staffordshire programme with Good2Great in 2023, before officially launching the business. This was his first step into self employment and he used the programme to build a clear understanding of what running a business would involve. The workshops, mentoring and practical sessions helped him shape his ideas, test his services and gain the confidence to turn the plan into something real.

He often says that entering the programme while the business was still only an idea gave him a real advantage. It meant he could launch with structure, clarity and a plan he trusted. It also gave him a supportive network to lean on during early decisions, from pricing and equipment choices to how to position his services in the local area.

Adam now supports mainly retired customers across Codsall with garden maintenance, lawn care, hedge work, tree trimming, waste removal and general garden improvements. A standout moment for him so far was helping a client regain the use of her greenhouse and garden beds after clearing and refreshing the space. She had worried she would no longer be able to manage her garden and seeing her excitement after the work was done reminded Adam why he chose this path.

The move from teaching into self employment was a big change, made more meaningful by the personal challenges Adam has faced in recent years, including a serious health issue. These experiences strengthened his determination to build something positive and make the most of each day.

Through Start Up South Staffordshire, delivered by Good2Great, Adam also received a grant which he used to purchase essential tools including a chainsaw, leaf blower, lawn edger and sprayer. This gave him a strong start and helped him deliver a reliable service from day one.

Looking ahead, Adam hopes to grow Adam’s Acre into something that supports the wider community. His long term vision is to create spaces that encourage wellbeing, recovery, personal development and connection, while improving local gardens in an environmentally conscious way.

Adam reflects on his journey with honesty:

Adam’s Acre is built on trust, integrity and hard work. The training and mentoring I received through Good2Great gave me the confidence, skills and knowledge to run my own business. It helped me launch well and continue growing every day.
