Whilst we’re labouring away at the coalface of our businesses it can be easy to ignore many of the wider economic and political factors that are changing around us.
The simple fact is that we’re working in a competitive world and our competitors are responding to new social trends and investing in skills and technology to get ahead.
So unless you are doing the same and your business is GROWING, you are actually going backwards and you are getting poorer… doing nothing is simply NOT an option.
How do you boil a frog?
A rather brutal experiment was carried out with frogs. I’m sorry if it offends, but it does illustrate the point;
A frog was dropped into a pan of boiling water. This prompted a significant reaction in the frog and it jumped out of the pan in order to ensure its survival. A second frog was put in cold water in a second pan which was slowly heated. The frog failed to respond to the changing environment and the water became so hot that survival was impossible and the frog died.
So, which frog are you? Are you tackling the changing environment or are you putting your head in the sand, and just fire-fighting while the water heats up around you?
Inertia and denial are the real enemies of business owners. It is an uncomfortable truth that we all use a myriad of reasons why not to do things (most come down to time and money). We all sometimes need a significant stimulus to break the cycle – a short sharp jolt that will wake you up and, like the first frog, prompt you to take some significant action to ensure survival.
By reading these editions of ‘Something For The Weekend’, you’ve already taken some positive action. I urge you to have a think about how your business is coping with the challenging environment. If you are ready to start taking more control, Business Coaching could help you kick start the process. We often say that everyone needs an unreasonable friend who’s prepared to point out the truth, however inconvenient. We are also aware that everyone needs a little inspiration, motivation and knowledge to help them achieve their business dreams.
I’m going to finish with two quotes which I hope will inspire you, taken from Life’s Little Instruction Book:
- “Don’t say you don’t have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Louis Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein.”
- “When you can’t change the direction of the wind – adjust your sails.”
