Is your glass half full?

It’s a corny, familiar question used to describe people’s natural disposition.

How you view your surroundings. Your attitude to the challenges and opportunities facing your business. And how you communicate these views to others. These all have a huge effect on how you’re viewed and can also influence how things work out.

People often ask us, “what is that magic ingredient that makes people more successful, more entrepreneurial?”

Since 2007, we’ve worked with over 1000 businesses, both established ones and brand new start-ups. We firmly believe that what differentiates more successful entrepreneurs is how they view that glass of water.

Entrepreneurs will see it as half full

Half full means it’s full of opportunities for them to seize. Rather than viewing it as half empty and focusing on negatives. Seeing only the risks.

Let’s face it, when presented with an opportunity, most people are ‘risk adverse’ and ask “What might go wrong?” An entrepreneur looks at opportunities slightly differently and asks, “What do I need to do to make things go right?”

So are entrepreneurs naturally optimistic and positive from the start?

Certainly not always. We are all hard wired to avoid risk. It’s in our DNA to make sure mankind survived. But it’s how we approach the problems and the risks and turn them into opportunities which marks out successful people. They are positive ‘opportunity takers’.

Just a word of warning: don’t confuse being an ‘opportunity taker’ with being a ‘risk taker’. It’s all about having a balanced and positive view and making sure the risks are mitigated and having a positive approach and looking for the opportunity – the glass half full – within a challenge.

What’s the learning?

So this weekend – think about the challenges and difficulties ahead and see if you can try to turn them into opportunities rather than focusing on the negatives.

As Churchill said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
